Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Studies show (and trust me, I’ve got the science receipts!) that this kind...

Toddler Choices & Mama Lessons: Finding Balance at Breakfast

Good Afternoon, Beautiful People!

As I prepare my home for some big changes, I have to be honest—it’s been a bit of a rough start for me. When I started this blog, I made a commitment to be real with my readers. So let’s get one thing straight: I am not perfect, nor will I ever claim to be. If you’re here looking for perfection, this might not be the place for you—and that’s okay! No hard feelings. But if you’re here for real-life parenting moments, honesty, and a journey toward better eating habits, then welcome! We’re in this together.

This morning, my son, Ermias, woke up late—just like he usually does—and ended up having a late breakfast. Can anyone guess what he picked for himself?

One of those little cereal bowls—Low Sugar Trix, to be exact. And after that? A fruit cup, because he chose it himself.

At first, I wanted to be hard on myself about it. I had this vision of him eating something healthier, something homemade and full of nutrients. But then I took a step back. I reminded myself that he made his own choice, and I don’t want to take away his sense of independence when it comes to food. Part of this journey is learning how to incorporate better choices while still allowing him some control over what he eats. It’s a delicate balance, but an important one.

Once he finishes his cereal and fruit cup, I’ll probably top his milk off with some veggie Cheerios. (Let’s be real—the only real vegetable in them is sweet potatoes, but hey, I’ll take it!) Small steps, right? This entire process is about gradual changes, not overnight perfection. If I focus too much on making everything “just right,” I might actually hinder our progress. Instead, I’m choosing to celebrate the little wins—like him picking fruit to go with his cereal—and using those moments to build a foundation for bigger changes.

Embracing the Journey, Not Perfection

One of the major changes I’m working on is getting my kitchen ready for all the recipes we’ll be trying together. Having a clean, organized space will make cooking easier and more enjoyable, which is key to successfully introducing new foods to Ermias. Right now, it’s a work in progress, but I’m excited about what’s to come.

I also want to reassure any other parents out there: if your journey toward better eating habits isn’t picture-perfect, that’s okay. Some days will be easier than others. Some meals will be a total success, while others might get pushed away untouched. It’s all part of the process, and as long as we keep moving forward, we’re making progress.

What’s Next?

In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more updates, real-life pictures, and of course, recipes that we’ll be trying together. This isn’t just about food—it’s about creating a positive relationship with eating, one meal at a time.

I’d love to hear from you, too! What are some small changes you’ve made to help your child eat healthier? Do you let your little one make their own food choices? Share your thoughts, experiences, and even your struggles in the comments. We’re all learning together!

So, let’s keep pushing forward, embracing the ups and downs, and working toward our goal: From Picky to Tasty!

Stay tuned for more, and as always, thank you for joining me on this journey. 💕
