Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Studies show (and trust me, I’ve got the science receipts!) that this kind...

Deconstructing the Yogurt Parfait: A New Approach for My Picky Eater

Toddler Taste Test: Deconstructing the Yogurt Parfait for My Picky Eater

If you read my last post, you know I was hopeful (but a little nervous) about introducing a yogurt & fruit parfait with oats and chia seeds to Ermias. While I love the idea of sneaking in extra nutrition, my little food explorer had other plans. 😅 Read about our first yogurt parfait attempt here!

The Verdict on the Yogurt Parfait Experiment

Short answer? Not a hit. Ermias wasn’t a fan of the oats mixed with yogurt, and—surprisingly—he wasn’t too excited about the texture of it all together. While he likes yogurt and enjoys fruit separately, combining everything in layers didn’t work for him. And that’s okay! I’ve learned that just because something sounds like a great idea doesn’t mean it will work for my picky eater. Every new food is a process, and we’re just taking small steps!

The New Plan: A Deconstructed Yogurt Parfait

Instead of layering everything together, I’m going to try a build-your-own parfait approach. The idea is simple: I’ll offer Ermias all the same ingredients, but separately, so he can control how (or if) he wants to mix them. Here’s what I’ll include on his plate:

✅ Plain or vanilla yogurt in a small bowl
✅ Sliced fruit he already enjoys (bananas, berries, mango)
✅ A small handful of oat clusters or granola on the side
✅ Coconut flakes for an extra topping option
✅ A drizzle of honey or maple syrup if he wants a little sweetness

By giving him choices and letting him create his own bite combinations, I’m hoping this will make him more comfortable exploring different textures and flavors at his own pace.

Why I Think This Will Work Better

⭐ No Surprises – Everything is familiar, just served in a way that lets him experiment.
⭐ More Control – Letting Ermias pick what he eats (and how) gives him a sense of independence.
⭐ Less Pressure – If he doesn’t want oats or coconut flakes today, that’s okay. The goal is exposure!

Will It Work? We’ll See!

I’ll be testing this out over the next few days and reporting back! If this approach helps him warm up to new textures, it could open the door to more food variety in the future. Stay tuned!
