Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Studies show (and trust me, I’ve got the science receipts!) that this kind...

Tuna Melt Crackers: A Toddler-Friendly Idea

Illustration of four tuna melt cracker sandwiches stacked neatly, featuring golden crackers with melted orange cheese and creamy tuna filling, set against a soft beige background in a warm, cartoon-like style.

So, I was having myself a little open-faced tuna melt the other day, and my brain went straight to food—Ermias’s food, to be exact. I started wondering if I could somehow work something similar into his diet. But here’s the kicker…

He won’t eat toast. He won’t eat bread. He won’t even look at anything that makes up a tuna melt.

Now, you might be thinking, “Okay, what about cheese?” After all, he loves mac and cheese. And yes, he does—but straight-up cheese? Slices, shredded, blocks, string—nope. Not happening. I’m not even sure when he stopped eating cheese like that. It just… disappeared from his “approved” list one day.

But honestly, the cheese isn't the problem. He gets plenty of that in his mac and cheese.

What I Really Want Him to Eat

Tuna. Or salmon. Honestly, any fish would be a win at this point. There are so many benefits to getting omega-3s and nutrients into his diet, especially if we could make it a once-a-week thing.

But getting him to try it? Now that’s where the challenge begins.

Cracker Love to the Rescue

One thing Ermias will eat without hesitation? Crackers. Pretty much any kind. He loves crunchy snacks. So I got to thinking…

What if I made a toddler-style tuna melt sandwich—but on crackers?

The Simple Sandwich Stack Plan

I’m keeping it simple for his developing palate. Here’s what I came up with:

  • Bottom cracker

  • Slice of cheese

  • Tuna with a tiny bit of mayo

  • Another slice of cheese

  • Top cracker

Now, I know what you're thinking: “Double cheese? But he already eats so much cheese!” I get it. But hear me out: the cheese acts like glue, just like those peanut butter sandwich crackers he already loves. If we melt it just right in the air fryer or microwave and let it cool, everything sticks together into one neat, sealed little pocket.

And the sneaky part? The tuna is hidden. It looks just like what he’s used to. Which means, he might actually take a bite. And that’s all we need. A bite.

Will It Work?

I have no idea. But at this point? Anything is worth a try. Our little ones deserve our best efforts, and if wrapping tuna in love and crackers is what it takes—I’m in.
