Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Studies show (and trust me, I’ve got the science receipts!) that this kind...

Sneaky Yogurt Ideas for Picky Eaters

Getting Creative with Picky Eaters

If you have a picky eater at home, you're not alone! Getting your little one to try new foods can be a challenge, but with a little creativity, you can sneak in some healthy ingredients without them even noticing. For example, Ermias, my son, is a visual eater. He’s more likely to try something if it looks like something he’s used to, so when it comes to meals like yogurt, I know I can mix in fruits and other healthy ingredients without raising suspicion!

One simple way I’ve managed to sneak in extra nutrition is by blending fruits like strawberries into plain Greek yogurt. You’d be surprised how easy it is to get a boost of vitamins and fiber without making any drastic changes to what your child is used to. This also works great if your child is like mine and prefers something creamy and familiar—like the Yoplait-style yogurt they're used to. Plus, with this idea, you can easily add a little flair by using fruits your child loves, like strawberries, cherries, or even apples.

Quick Strawberry Yogurt Recipe:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt (use a variety your child prefers)

  • 1/4 cup fresh or frozen strawberries (or any other fruit they enjoy)

  • 1-2 teaspoons honey (optional, for sweetness)

  • A squeeze of lemon or lime juice (optional, to enhance the flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Blend the strawberries (or any fruit of your choice) in a blender until smooth.

  2. Mix the fruit puree into the Greek yogurt. You can adjust the fruit-to-yogurt ratio based on your child’s taste.

  3. Add a little honey for sweetness if needed (but I find the fruit usually does the trick).

  4. Serve it chilled, and enjoy watching your picky eater enjoy this healthy twist!

Why This Works for Picky Eaters: For children like Ermias, who are visual eaters, the color and texture of the food can make a huge difference. Mixing bright fruits like strawberries or cherries into yogurt not only makes it more appealing, but it’s also a great way to introduce new flavors and nutrients. You can get creative with the fruits you use and experiment with adding extra nutrients, like chia seeds or a squeeze of fresh citrus juice, for a healthy boost.

Real-Time Results of Our Journey: Since we’re on this journey together, you can expect real-time updates on whether Ermias liked or disliked certain meals. I’ll share the highs and the lows, giving you a firsthand look at what works and what doesn’t for picky eaters like ours. This way, you’ll get honest, real-time feedback as I experiment with different ways to sneak in healthier options and make meals more enjoyable.

This is one of those "recipes" that’s more about experimenting with what your kid enjoys and finding ways to make it healthier without compromising on taste. It’s a simple, fun way to go from picky to tasty!
