Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Studies show (and trust me, I’ve got the science receipts!) that this kind...

Learning As I Go (Picky Toddler In Tow)

Lately, I've been working hard on making small, steady changes to the way I eat — not just for me, but for my family, too. It's been a mix of experiments, little wins, and, honestly, a lot of laughs (especially when it comes to shaking up containers and chasing down hidden sauce at the bottom 😂).

Today, as I sat eating my salmon meal — a little avocado tossed in, a cold grape Propel nearby, and some quiet music playing — I felt proud. Not just because the food tasted good, but because this simple moment reminded me: progress isn’t always loud or flashy. Sometimes it’s quiet, sitting with your food, feeling full and satisfied, and being okay with that.

Of course, this journey isn't just about me.
Ermias, my spirited, growing toddler, is right alongside me. His food journey is just as much a part of this as mine. Some days, he eats everything in front of him (messily, of course), and other days, blueberries fly across the kitchen like tiny purple comets. It's a dance we're learning together — honoring our bodies, our needs, and making food feel safe, not forced.

One thing I've learned along the way?
Preparation matters — but perfection doesn’t.
Whether it's making sure I shake up my salad container better next time so all the tzatziki sauce doesn't hide at the bottom, or accepting that Ermias might take an hour just to pick at his yogurt with his hands, it’s all part of the rhythm we’re finding.

Tiny Lessons I'm Carrying With Me:

  • Shake the salad better... but if you forget, just laugh and enjoy the puddle surprise.

  • Keep foods simple and satisfying — you don't have to "earn" your meals.

  • Kids' eating habits will grow and shift over time — patience is love in action.

  • Celebrate the quiet victories — they matter more than you know.

I don't have it all figured out (and honestly, who does?), but I'm committed to learning, adjusting, and being kind to myself along the way — for me, and for Ermias.

If you're on a similar path — trying to nourish yourself while juggling life, motherhood, and everything in between — just know: you're not alone. Every bite, every choice, every small adjustment is a step forward. 🌿
