Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Fed & Happy: Real-Life Meals with My Toddler

Late Lunch, No Pressure: Our Real-Life Toddler Meal Rhythm

Some days, we wake up at noon. Some days, lunch happens closer to dinner. And you know what? That’s real life with a toddler.

Today was one of those days. We both rolled out of bed around 12pm and had a slow start to the day. Breakfast happened late, and by the time hunger hit again, it was already 5pm. Instead of stressing over it, we just went with the flow.

What’s on My Toddler’s Plate

For lunch, I served up one of my toddler’s favorites: mac and cheese. I added a side of peas—one of those foods I’ve been gently reintroducing. No pressure, no expectations. Just putting them there. Some days he eats a few, some days he ignores them entirely. And that’s totally okay.

He also had a little bowl of canned mandarin oranges (an easy win) and his go-to drink, orange juice. Familiar favorites, with a little food exploration on the side.

My Own Plate (That Becomes His Dinner)

I made a quick rice cooker meal I’ve had before—something savory with a bit of sweet Korean BBQ sauce and an extra kick of spice to balance it all out. Nothing fancy, but flavorful and easy.

And since we’ll likely eat leftovers for dinner, I’ll just offer him a few bits of my meal on his tray later, right alongside his usual mac and cheese. It’s another easy way to share parts of my food with him while still giving him what he loves.

Our Rhythm: Flexible, Familiar, and Food-Positive

There’s no strict meal plan here—just a rhythm that works for us. Some staples he counts on (hi, mac and cheese) mixed with small, no-pressure reintroductions like peas. I keep offering. He keeps deciding. And mealtime stays relaxed.

Whether we’re eating breakfast at noon or lunch at 5pm, we’re nourishing our bodies and staying connected—and that’s enough.
