Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Studies show (and trust me, I’ve got the science receipts!) that this kind...

Easy Mom Meal:Rice Cooker Magic

Warm, hearty rice cooker breakfast featuring crispy potatoes, steamed broccoli, scrambled eggs, and melted cheese—perfect for a quick, filling meal.

πŸ₯”✨ Cozy Rice Cooker Breakfast Bowl

(Potatoes, Broccoli, Egg & Cheese — No Pans Needed)

Some mornings, I don’t want to touch the stove. I don’t want to scrub a pan or do the most just to eat something warm. But I do want something comforting, filling, and good for my body.

That’s where this breakfast bowl comes in—simple ingredients tossed into the rice cooker and left to do their thing. No fuss, no extra dishes, and still packed with love (and cheese πŸ˜ŒπŸ§€).

✨ Why You’ll Love It:

  • No stove or pans needed

  • Flavorful, cozy, and super customizable

  • Warm and savory with no sugar crash

  • All-in-one bowl — even the egg

  • Feels like a hug without the work

πŸ“ Ingredients:

  • 1–2 potatoes, cubed small

  • A handful of frozen broccoli florets

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp oil or butter (optional)

  • Seasonings I used: adobo, lemon pepper, garlic powder, garlic parmesan

  • Cheese to melt on top (whatever you’ve got!)

🍳 How to Make It:

  1. Add the Potatoes
Cube your potatoes and add to the rice cooker with a little oil and all your seasonings. I used a mix of adobo, lemon pepper, garlic powder, and garlic parmesan for a bold, comforting flavor.

  2. Add Frozen Broccoli
No need to thaw—just toss it in on top. The steam does the rest.

  3. Start Cooking
Hit “cook” and let it go for about 10–15 minutes. Stir halfway through if you’d like.

  4. Crack in the Egg
Once the potatoes are tender, crack an egg right on top. Close the lid again and let it steam until set.

  5. Cheese Time
While it’s still hot, sprinkle your cheese on top and let it melt in all that cozy steam.

  6. Serve and Enjoy
Straight from the rice cooker if you’re keeping it easy—no shame here!

πŸ’‘ Ideas & Swaps:

  • Add spinach, peas, or chopped peppers

  • Swap in any cheese you love or use dairy-free

  • Top with hot sauce, herbs, or avocado

  • Season it your way — this bowl is yours

πŸ‘ΆπŸ½πŸ’‘ Picky Eater Tip:

If you’re serving this to a toddler (like I am), try this little routine that’s helped us:

  • 1 new thing on the plate

  • 2 things they already love

  • Offer their drink after they’ve eaten or when they ask—not before. (Drinks too early can fill them up fast!)

It keeps things relaxed, encourages trying new foods without pressure, and makes mealtime feel like less of a battle and more like a chance to explore.
