Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Studies show (and trust me, I’ve got the science receipts!) that this kind...

Celebrating Each Step: Navigating Picky Eating With Ermias

A Morning of Small Wins with Ermias

Today was an interesting morning with Ermias and his breakfast choices. As usual, he was a little hesitant with something new, but I was pleasantly surprised when he gave it a chance!

Trying New Foods: A Small but Meaningful Victory For breakfast, he had a mini bowl of Lucky Charms with soy milk (though, as expected, he didn’t drink the milk). He also tried a BelVita biscuit for the first time. At first, he was cautious—licking it a few times before taking a bite—but once he did, he actually ate it! Since he’s such a visual eater and picky about textures, I was happy to see him accept something new, even if it was just one biscuit from the pack.

Focusing on Wins Instead of Setbacks I know today’s breakfast had more sugar than I’d prefer, but instead of focusing on that as a failure, I’m choosing to celebrate the little win—he tried something new! It’s so important to recognize progress rather than get caught up in what didn’t go as planned. This journey is about small steps forward, not perfection.

Making the Most of What We Have Another key reminder: we have to work with what we have. Right now, we’re finding the best breakfast choices based on what’s available until our next grocery haul. For example, Ermias is out of yogurt, and I’m planning to switch him to a non-dairy option. However, since he previously refused non-dairy yogurt, I might need to compromise and try Greek yogurt instead—blending in healthy ingredients while cutting out dairy in other areas of his diet.

Prepping for Healthier Choices I’m also focusing on cleaning and organizing my kitchen so we can start making more intentional changes. One of my main goals is to bake homemade crunchy bars packed with veggies and fruit, with no added sugar. Something that still gives him the crunch he loves but in a more nutritious way! I’m thinking of experimenting with natural binders like mashed bananas or applesauce, maybe adding some nut butter for healthy fats, and using flaxseeds as an egg substitute. It’s all about finding what works for him while still making sure he’s getting the nutrients he needs.

Looking Ahead with Positivity It’s definitely a process, but I’m determined to keep trying new ways to expand his food preferences. Small wins—like him trying the BelVita biscuit today—keep me motivated. If anyone has tips for making toddler-friendly crunchy bars, I’d love to hear them!
