Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Studies show (and trust me, I’ve got the science receipts!) that this kind...

Juggling It All: My Journey into Toddler Meals

a showdown mom image showing her juggling daily tasks in bubbles (cooking, cleaning, parenting, self care can be read.)

Hello, beautiful people!

As a mom, it feels like I’m always juggling multiple roles: chef, housekeeper, entertainer, and, of course, trying to maintain my own sense of self. And with my toddler, Ermias, becoming pickier with his eating every day, it seems like I’m diving into a whole new world of challenges. From cooking to cleaning, toddler chaos, and finding the time to take care of myself, there are so many moving pieces to this puzzle.

But here’s the thing—this is our journey, and I don’t have all the answers. In fact, I’m nervous, unsure, and honestly, I’m not certain how well all of this will work. What I do know is that I’m ready to give my all. Together, we’ll navigate the struggles, face the triumphs, and learn along the way.

I’m inviting you to come along with me as I try to figure out how to balance feeding a picky eater, keeping our home running smoothly, and still finding time for self-care. I’m about to start this journey, and I’m hoping we can all learn and grow together.

The Struggles Ahead: Cooking, Cleaning, and Toddler Chaos

Now, let me be real: there are definitely struggles ahead. As I look at the piles of dishes, the never-ending cycle of cleaning, and the picky-eating habits of my toddler, it’s overwhelming. Ermias has become so selective with what he eats lately, and mealtime has become a stressful battlefield.

And then, of course, there’s the never-ending mess that toddlers create—everything is an adventure to be spilled or scattered across the floor! And let’s not forget about keeping him entertained and happy while trying to do all of that. It’s enough to make anyone feel like they’re running on empty.

So, where do I start? I know that if I’m going to conquer this, I need a plan—but I’m still figuring it out. I don’t know exactly how things will turn out or how successful I’ll be, but I’m committed to trying my best, and I’d love for you to join me in this journey.

The Plan: Slowly but Surely

Here’s the thing: this isn’t going to be a quick fix. I’m not promising a perfect solution or a magic wand that will suddenly make everything smooth and easy. What I do want to do is take small, manageable steps every day.

1. Meal Planning and Experimenting
Since cooking has become such a challenge with a picky eater, I’m going to start by planning simple meals that incorporate ingredients Ermias already loves—things like yogurt, fruit, and his favorite cereals. But I’m also going to sneak in new ingredients, like oats and chia seeds, to introduce him to more nutrition, one bite at a time. I’m hoping that by slowly expanding his palate, he’ll become more open to new foods—but again, I’m not sure how it’s going to go. This is an experiment, and I’ll be sharing everything with you along the way.

2. Cleaning with a Toddler
With a toddler running around, cleaning has never felt like a “one-and-done” task. I’m planning on breaking down the cleaning process into smaller chunks each day—focusing on one room or one task at a time. I’ll also involve Ermias in the process, letting him “help” with simple chores to make it fun for him (and hopefully, make my workload a little lighter!).

3. Keeping Him Entertained
I know that keeping a toddler entertained and engaged is no easy feat, so I’m going to try creating a list of fun, simple activities. Some of them will be independent play, some will be interactive, and some will involve me getting in the kitchen to cook with him. I’m hoping that by keeping him engaged in a variety of activities, it’ll help me stay productive in the kitchen and around the house, but again, I’m not sure how everything will play out.

4. Prioritizing Self-Care
As much as I want to take care of everyone and everything else, I can’t forget about myself. I know that if I’m not taking care of me, I won’t be able to be the best mom I can be. My plan is to carve out little moments each day—whether it’s a cup of coffee, a walk outside, or even a few minutes of deep breathing—to make sure I’m recharging. I’m going to need to work on this, and I’ll be sure to update you all on how it’s going.

Why I’m Hopeful (and Nervous)

I’ll admit, I’m a little nervous about this whole thing. Will Ermias like the new foods I try to introduce? Will the cleaning system work, or will I get overwhelmed? And most importantly, will I be able to find time for myself without feeling guilty?

The truth is, I don’t have all the answers yet. But I do have hope, and I’m committed to trying my best. I know it won’t be perfect, and there will be days where nothing goes as planned, but I’m learning that progress comes in small steps. I’m going to give it my all, and I hope you’ll stick around for the journey, no matter how bumpy it gets.

Come Along for the Ride

This is the start of my journey, and I want to share it all with you—every trial, every win, every lesson learned. I know it won’t be easy, but I’m here to give it my all, and I hope you’ll be part of this journey with me. Together, we can support each other and learn how to tackle the daily chaos of picky eating, toddlerhood, and taking care of ourselves.

So, what do you think? Are you ready to take this ride with me? I’d love to hear how you manage your own routines and if you have any tips for making mealtime, cleaning, and keeping kids entertained easier.

Thanks For Coming Along For The Ride

Thank you for joining me as I begin this new chapter! I’ll be back soon with updates on how things are going, the recipes we’re trying, and the small victories that make all the difference. Until next time!
