Picky Eating VS Sensory Play

Tackling Picky Eating with Sensory Play: How Ermias Is Learning to Love Food One Crunch at a Time Hey, friends! Destiny here, coming at you with a little real-life mom magic from my chaotic-but-adorable world. If you’re battling a picky eater like me, you already know the struggle is real . The mealtime negotiations, the turned-up noses, and the please just eat something prayers. But guess what? There’s a gentle, fun way to help our little food explorers get comfortable with new textures and tastes — and it’s called sensory play . What Is Sensory Play—and Why Does It Matter? Sensory play is all about letting kids use their senses—touch, sight, sound, and sometimes even taste—to explore the world around them without pressure or expectation. For picky eaters, this can be a total game-changer. Instead of forcing food into tiny mouths, sensory play gives them the chance to get to know food on their own terms. Creamy Dreamy Pasta Plan

When Your Toddler Isn’t Feeling Adventurous
Lately, Ermias has been very particular about what he’ll eat.

Today’s Yogurt Attempt
This morning, I tried giving him some Greek yogurt (he's not a fan) with a splash of maraschino cherry juice stirred in. It gave the yogurt that familiar color he usually likes, and I even added two cherries on top—something he’s loved before. Still… a no-go.

What Worked Instead
He genuinely enjoys most fruits I’ve ever given him, but this was definitely not a win. I ended up giving him some Honey Nut Cheerios with soy milk just so he’d eat something. I left the yogurt on his tray, just in case he changed his mind, but nope—solid pass.

Rethinking Yogurt Options
I think it’s time to go back to Yoplait. Maybe they have a lower-sugar version, or maybe I’ll find something that looks more fun and familiar for him. I’ve been leaning toward getting the bigger containers to save money, but clearly, Ermias prefers his little individual cups. Sometimes it’s the tiniest details that matter most to our little ones.

Upcoming Grocery Haul Plans
A grocery haul is definitely in order. I haven’t shared one in a while, but I’m planning to head to Sam’s Club soon to look for bulk frozen salmon (fingers crossed) and maybe swing by Aldi too.

The Pasta Plan: Creamy & Veggie-Packed
On the menu: creamy pasta. I’m thinking butternut squash or pumpkin... maybe both! Add in some bell peppers, onions, garlic, mushrooms, nutritional yeast—and we might just have a winner. The goal is to create a rich, dairy-free sauce that’s loaded with veggies and toddler approved.

Let’s See What Happens
We’ll see how it goes. Wish me luck in the kitchen. 💛
